It all began during the Prussian war when King Louis XIV of France fought alongside the Croatian mercenaries. These Croatian soldiers wore a wide collar knotted cloth around their necks, the French adored this look and gave it a twist of their own calling it the ‘cravat’ (French for “Croatian”). Fanning this elegant accessory, the French began showcasing it and imbibed it as an essential part of their style. During this time in history, France was a leading state for fashion.


Soon cravat joined the high ranks of society and became the staple symbol of power, elegance, and royalty. Spreading like fire throughout the 17th and 18th centuries, eventually it was the British that further popularized this accessory by adapting it into different fabrics, from silk to muslin.


By the 1900s, the bow tie was a ‘must have’ collection and a very significant part of a full formal attire. At this point in time, it trickled down to every rank of society. Every profession from industrial workers to medicine – the bow tie created its impression in the fashion history books. After WWII the everyday wear of bow ties declined and yet stayed a prominent part of formal wear.
